A Feng Shui Bill Went to Court, and Lost
Singapore's High Court called thousands paid to a feng shui master a gift, not a loan. What that money actually buys, and who owns it afterwards.
IN PLAIN WORDS
- 1A Singapore High Court judge dismissed a CEO's claim to recover roughly US$370,000 from a former partner, finding the money was gifts, not loans — the feng shui consultation among the disputed items.
- 2Half of a home reading is keyed to the building and half to the person in it. Flying Stars needs the facing in degrees and the period; Eight Mansions needs the occupant's own birth year and sex.
- 3Because of that split, two people in the same apartment can have exactly opposite lists of four good directions — so a reading bought for someone else's home is largely a reading of them.
- 4No system we calculate with claims to harmonize anything. Ask for the facing in degrees, the period, the chart and each occupant's Kua in writing, or you cannot tell later what you paid for.
On September 11 Singapore's High Court dismissed a claim by the chief executive of a logistics company, who had sued a former partner for about S$468,090 — roughly US$370,000 — that he said were loans. Senior Judge Lee Seiu Kin found they were gifts. The disputed items were the ordinary furniture of a relationship conducted at that income: luxury goods, first-class tickets, insurance premiums, university fees, charges on a credit card. One of them was not ordinary. Among the sums he wanted back were thousands paid to a feng shui master to work on her apartment — and his argument for why that particular payment had to be a loan was that he is Indian and does not believe in the practice.
The legal question is settled and not ours. The interesting one is the one underneath it: what does a payment to a feng shui consultant buy, and whose is it afterwards?
A home reading has two halves, and only one of them is about the home
Take the two systems this site actually computes with. Flying Stars builds a chart from two inputs and no others: the period the building belongs to, and the direction it faces, in degrees. Our own function takes exactly that — a period number and a facing — and returns nine palaces of paired stars. Nobody's birthday enters it. That chart is a fact about the building. It outlives every tenancy, and if the apartment is sold tomorrow the new owner inherits it unchanged.
Eight Mansions works the other way. It starts from a person: their birth year, adjusted to the solar year that turns at the Start of Spring (Li Chun), around February 4, and their recorded sex. From that comes a Kua number, and from the Kua number four directions that suit them and four that do not. The apartment does not appear in the calculation at all until you lay the eight sectors over the floor plan.
So a consultation on a dwelling is two readings stapled together, and they answer to different owners. Half of it belongs to the address. Half of it belongs to whoever sleeps there.
That is not a figure of speech. Run two birth dates through our Kua calculator and you can get Sheng Qi (vitality) south, Tian Yi (heavenly doctor) north, Yan Nian (longevity) southeast, Fu Wei (stability) east for one person, and southwest, northwest, west, northeast for the other — every direction that serves the first is one the second is told to avoid. Two people can live in one apartment and be owed two different arrangements of it. Which means a reading commissioned for somebody else's home, in the half that governs where their desk and bed go, is not really about the home. It is about them. There was never anything in it for the payer to take away, and no refund available by ceasing to believe in it.
What a consultation should leave behind
A reading is a document, not an afternoon. If you pay for one, these are the things that should still be in your hands a year later, and none of them is a trade secret.
The facing in degrees, not "roughly south". The compass ring divides into twenty-four mountains of fifteen degrees each, and a facing near a boundary produces a different chart on either side of it. Our own tool refuses to pick for you when a measurement lands within three degrees of one; a consultant who will not tell you the number they used has removed the one input you could check. The year the building was completed, which fixes the period. The chart itself, palace by palace, rather than a list of instructions derived from a chart you never saw. Each occupant's Kua number and the four directions it makes auspicious — one line per person, and it should be obvious that the lines differ. And a reason attached to every recommendation, naming the rule it comes from.
Where the claim was always overstated
The part of this story that deserves the plainest answer is the part nobody argued in court. Nothing in Flying Stars, Eight Mansions or Form School predicts a relationship, and nothing in them repairs one. These systems describe a place, and they grade it against the people in it, and that is the whole of their reach. Whatever went wrong between these two people, the arrangement of an apartment was not the variable, and a consultant who implied otherwise was selling something the tradition does not contain. We will not pretend otherwise for the sake of a nicer sentence: a reading is a description, not a lever.
Which leaves the odd symmetry in the judgment. The strongest evidence that the feng shui bill was a gift is the very thing the plaintiff offered as evidence that it was a loan — that he did not believe in it. You do not lend somebody money for a service you consider worthless and expect it back. You pay for it because they wanted it, which is what a gift is. The court got there through the law of gifts. The tradition gets there by its own route: the work was keyed to her building and her birth data, it was never transferable, and there was nothing in it he could repossess.
It is a small case and it will be forgotten. The question it accidentally asked is not small. Most people who buy a reading never find out what they bought, because nothing they were handed can be checked against anything. That is fixable, and it costs the consultant nothing but the willingness to show the working.
