What it means
↑ Upright
At full gallop into the wind, sword high: Waite likens him to Galahad, the knight of the Grail legend, swift and sure because pure of heart. In someone else, this is a brave, sharp, combative person who acts before others have finished talking. In you, it calls for decisive action in a cause you believe is right. Make sure it is right, and that speed is not doing the thinking.
↓ Reversed
The charge without the aim: imprudence, extravagance, a great deal of force spent with no means of finishing what it starts. It can be a person who picks fights and leaves the mess to others, or your own urge to settle everything at once. Rein in. Choose the one battle that matters, and let the others go by.
A knight in armor charges at full gallop on a white horse, sword raised, driving into a wind that bends the trees and drags the clouds into streaks. The harness is decorated with butterflies and birds, emblems of air, and the horse's flying mane matches its rider's speed. Waite describes him as if scattering his enemies, a hero of romantic chivalry: courage and conviction, with the risk that comes of acting faster than anyone else can think.
Upright
Skill, bravery, capacity, defense, address, enmity, wrath, war, destruction, opposition, resistance, ruin. There is therefore a sense in which the card signifies death, but it carries this meaning only in its proximity to other cards of fatality.
Reversed
Imprudence, incapacity, extravagance.
