Three Summer Signs Warned for a Scorpio Date

A Start of Winter health list named Cancer, Leo and Virgo. Both calendars measure the same angle, and that angle puts November 7 in Scorpio.

冬ALMANACSUITSAVOID

IN PLAIN WORDS

  1. 1The two calendars are divisions of one number, so the Start of Winter converts exactly. The twenty-four Chinese solar terms and the Western sun signs both cut up apparent solar longitude — the terms every 15 degrees, the signs every 30 — and the Start of Winter is defined as 225 degrees, which is 15 degrees of Scorpio, every year. In 2026 it falls on November 7 at 17:52 Beijing time.
  2. 2The three signs named are summer signs. Cancer, Leo and Virgo are the arcs the sun crossed between June 21 and September 23, 2026; by the Start of Winter it has traveled 60 to 120 degrees past them, two to four months of its journey.
  3. 3Checked in the signs' own system, one of the three fits and two contradict it. Leo sits 90 degrees from the date — a square, which that tradition reads as stressful. Cancer sits at 120 and Virgo at 60, the two separations the same tradition calls easy, and Aquarius and Taurus, which it would name beside Leo, are not on the list.
  4. 4There is no feng shui in the article at all. No direction, no sector, no chart and no birth-year animal appears in it, and whose old condition returns in cold weather is a question for a doctor rather than for a calendar.

CTi News in Taiwan published a list of six things to avoid at the Start of Winter, which falls tomorrow, and HK01 in Hong Kong republished it today. Five of the six are seasonal health advice from the practitioner Xiao Meng, who works mainly in Western astrology and tarot: do not go out too early into the cold, do not drink large quantities of very hot water, do not bathe long and hot, do not exercise hard as the temperature drops, sleep early and rise early. The sixth is the one the headline leads on. It names three sun signs — Cancer, Leo and Virgo — and says those among them with weak constitutions should watch for old or hidden complaints returning around the Start of Winter.

Most pieces of this kind cannot be checked, because the claim and the reasoning are never on the page together. This one is unusual, and the reason is worth stating before anything else: the Chinese solar terms and the Western sun signs are not two incommensurable traditions here. They are two scales marked on the same line. Both divide apparent solar longitude measured from the vernal equinox — the terms into twenty-four arcs of 15 degrees, the signs into twelve of 30. So the conversion is arithmetic, and it runs in both directions.

One number, two calendars

The Start of Winter is not a date that happens to fall in early November. It is the instant the sun's apparent longitude reaches 225 degrees, and the date follows from that. Tropical Scorpio is the arc from 210 to 240 degrees. So the Start of Winter is the 15th degree of Scorpio — not usually, not approximately, but by construction, every year, in every time zone the calendar is kept in. This site's own solar-term code puts the 2026 crossing at 17:52 Beijing time on November 7; the article gives the date and no time, which is the usual and reasonable choice for a general-audience piece.

The same function settles the other half. Cancer is 90 to 120 degrees, Leo 120 to 150, Virgo 150 to 180. Run those four boundaries for 2026 and the sun entered Cancer on June 21, Leo on July 23, Virgo on August 23, and left Virgo on September 23. Those are the familiar sun-sign dates, to the day, out of the same code that produces the solar terms — which is itself the point worth pausing on. One calculation, two vocabularies.

And it places the three signs that were named. They are the summer arcs. By the time the sun reaches the Start of Winter it has moved 60 degrees past the middle of Virgo, 90 past the middle of Leo and 120 past the middle of Cancer — between two and four months of travel.

The fair reading, and what it gives

That alone is not yet an objection, and it would be a cheap one. A sun sign is a birth position, not a current one. Nobody claims the sun is in Virgo in November; the claim is about people born when it was. So the honest version of the question is: what relation does Western astrology say holds between a natal sun at 150 to 180 degrees and a transiting sun at 225?

It has an answer, and the answer is specific. That tradition reads the angular separation between two positions, and names the separations: 90 degrees is a square and 180 an opposition, both read as stressful; 60 is a sextile and 120 a trine, both read as easy. Measured against 225 degrees, the signs on the hard separations are Leo at 90, Aquarius at 90 and Taurus at 180 — which is simply to say that Scorpio is a fixed sign and the other three fixed signs are the ones it strains against.

Set the list beside that. Leo is on the list and is a square, so one of the three is exactly where the doctrine would put it. Cancer is 120 degrees away, a trine. Virgo is 60 degrees away, a sextile. Those are the two separations the same tradition calls favorable. And Aquarius and Taurus, the two signs it would name alongside Leo, do not appear.

Those of Cancer, Leo or Virgo with weak constitutions should take particular care around the Start of Winter over old ailments recurring.

What the Start of Winter does name

The Chinese systems do have a layer that reads a calendar date against a particular person, and it is not a sun sign. The Start of Winter opens a solar month — this one the Earth Pig month, inside the Fire Horse year — and the reader's own layer is the relation between their birth-year animal and that month's animal. For the Pig month that names six animal signs and no others, which we worked through on November 1 when a Taiwanese report named four, three of them unrelated. A second layer turns over the same morning: the flying star chart, which puts 8 in the center from November 7, and which names parts of a building rather than people at all. Neither layer contains a Western sun sign, for the ordinary reason that neither was built with one in it.

Which leaves the shape of the article itself, and it is worth naming plainly. Nothing in it is feng shui. There is no direction, no sector, no chart, no facing, and no birth-year animal anywhere in the piece — we checked the whole of it. Four of the six items are cold-weather prudence that needs no system to support it and gets none: cold mornings are hard on older people, a long hot bath in a cold house is a poor idea, hard exercise in falling temperatures is a known risk. That advice belongs to the Chinese seasonal-living tradition, which is a real body of practice and a separate one from feng shui, and it is not improved by being attached to a date. A solar term is not a switch. It is a 15-degree arc of the sun's travel, about fifteen days wide, and the day it opens on carries no more of it than the day after.

The unusual thing about today's story is how little needed to be assumed to look into it. The Start of Winter and the sun signs are the same measurement at two resolutions, so there was no need to argue about whether two traditions can be compared — the conversion is a division. What came out is narrow and specific: of three signs named for one date, one is where that date's own doctrine would put it and two are on the separations the doctrine calls easy.

Our personal reading is free, and it will tell you which animal signs the current solar month names for you and why, from your birth date, with the branch relation printed rather than asserted. It will not tell you that a date is coming for your health. Nothing we can compute would support that, and when a reading depends on something we cannot compute, the tool says so instead of guessing.
