Engineers Ran a Courtyard Through CFD. The Southeast Gate Won.
A study in Buildings tested a Beijing courtyard house against airflow simulation and field measurement. The feng shui layout widened the comfortable wind zone by 75.52%.
IN PLAIN WORDS
- 1An airflow study of a Beijing courtyard house found the feng shui layout made the comfortable wind zone 75.52% larger.
- 2The key was the southeast gate, which catches the summer monsoon.
- 3In the trigrams, southeast is Xun ☴ — and Xun means wind. The old rule was a climate observation.
- 4It supports one Form School principle in one climate. It does not prove Flying Stars, Kua numbers or wealth corners.
A paper in the journal Buildings took a Beijing siheyuan — the classic four-sided courtyard house — and tested its layout with computational fluid dynamics alongside on-site measurement. The comparison was between the arrangement feng shui prescribes and one that ignores it.
The headline number: with the entrance at the southeastern point, the comfortable wind zone expanded by 75.52% over the non-feng-shui layout. The researchers attribute it to the southeastern gateway catching the summer monsoon and moving air through the courtyard rather than letting it stall. The moon gate and the screen wall, both treated as decorative by most modern readers, turn out to shape that airflow too.
Here is why this one is worth your attention rather than the usual study-says story. The southeast entrance is not an arbitrary preference in the tradition. In the Later Heaven arrangement of the trigrams, southeast is Xun — and Xun is wind. The character sits in that position precisely because that is the quarter the moving air was understood to come from.
So a rule written in the vocabulary of trigrams turns out to encode a climate observation about a specific latitude. The tradition was not describing a metaphysical breeze. It was describing the actual prevailing summer wind over the North China Plain, in the only technical language it had.
That limitation is the interesting part, not a disclaimer we are tacking on. The pieces of feng shui most likely to survive scrutiny are the ones that were always describing something physical: where wind comes from, where water collects, what stands behind you, how light enters. Those claims have a mechanism, and a mechanism can be tested. Read the tradition that way and papers like this one stop being surprising.
