What it means
↑ Upright
She closes the lion's jaws with bare hands and leads it on a chain of flowers. Courage of this kind is patient rather than loud: it tames what is wild in a situation, or in you, through steadiness and goodwill. Meet the difficult thing calmly, be generous where you could be harsh, and trust a firm, gentle hand.
↓ Reversed
The lion and the woman have changed places: either force is doing the work patience should do — a raised voice, a hard line, power used because it is there — or doubt has drained the will to act at all. Both often grow from the same fear, so steady yourself first and reach for the quieter kind of strength.
A woman crowned and girdled with flowers rests her hands on a lion's mouth, the Magician's infinity sign floating over her head. Waite, who calls the card Fortitude, reads the lion as the passions and the woman as the higher nature that has mastered them; the garland that leads the lion is, in his words, the sweet yoke and the light burden. The Magician's will has become patience here, and strength works through gentleness rather than force.
Upright
Power, energy, action, courage, magnanimity; also complete success and honors.
Reversed
Despotism, abuse of power, weakness, discord, sometimes even disgrace.
