What it means
↑ Upright
A beginning taken lightly, before the risks are counted. The card favors openness: saying yes, setting out, letting curiosity lead. Its warning sits in the picture — the cliff edge he does not see — so go, but look where you put your feet.
↓ Reversed
Carelessness passing for courage: a leap that skips the looking, or, the other way around, a plan left idle because nothing ever feels certain enough. The answer to both is the same — one concrete step, chosen on purpose and taken with your eyes open.
A young traveler in a patterned tunic walks to the cliff's edge with his eyes on the sky, a small dog leaping at his heels and the sun high above. The bundle on his staff is commonly read as all he carries from the past, the rose in his other hand as the innocence of his wish, and the dog as either a warning or loyal company. Waite calls him the spirit in search of experience.
Upright
Folly, mania, extravagance, intoxication, delirium, frenzy, bewrayment.
Reversed
Negligence, absence, distribution, carelessness, apathy, nullity, vanity.
