What it means
↑ Upright
Something has come to a good end and been shared: three friends in a garden, cups lifted, the harvest at their feet. Success means more when others are glad of it with you, so mark it — gather the people who helped, and let thanks be part of the celebration.
↓ Reversed
A party can go on past the point of joy. Read reversed, the card points to matters dispatched in a hurry, and to the side of pleasure that tips into excess. Enjoy what there is to enjoy, but notice when company has become a way of not looking at something, and give yourself a quiet evening to see it clearly.
Three is growth, and in Cups it is a feeling that has spread beyond two people into a circle of friends. In the 1909 Smith–Waite deck, this card shows three young women dancing in a garden, cups raised high, with gourds, grapes and other fruit of the harvest at their feet. Often compared to the Three Graces of classical art, they face one another rather than the viewer: gladness that needs company to mean anything.
Upright
The conclusion of any matter in plenty, perfection and merriment; happy issue, victory, fulfilment, solace, healing.
Reversed
Expedition, dispatch, achievement, end. It signifies also the side of excess in physical enjoyment, and the pleasures of the senses.
