What it means
↑ Upright
Seven prizes float in a cloud — a castle, jewels, a wreath, a serpent, a veiled shape — and not one of them is yet in anyone's hand. Imagination is at full stretch here, rich in possibility and short of substance. Enjoy the dreaming, then pick one and ask what it would take to make it real.
↓ Reversed
One cup chosen from the seven, and the cloud thins. Reversed, the card reads as desire, will and determination — wishing turned into a project. Hold to the choice long enough to see it tested, and write down the first three things it asks of you.
Seven sets a test, and in Cups the test is telling a true desire from a fantasy. In the 1909 Smith–Waite deck, this card shows a dark figure, seen from behind, facing seven cups that float on a cloud, each holding a different vision: a face, a veiled and glowing form, a snake, a castle, jewels, a wreath and a dragon. Resting on cloud, none has any footing; Waite calls them images of the fantastic spirit.
Upright
Fairy favors, images of reflection, sentiment, imagination, things seen in the glass of contemplation; some attainment in these degrees, but nothing permanent or substantial is suggested.
Reversed
Desire, will, determination, project.
